Christians are called to be peacemakers who believe in and follow Jesus who is the life of the world. He is a God who is life. While many of us parents know this intellectually, it’s not always clear or easy to communicate this with our children. This is all the more true with the pro-life movement in general. What do we need to know before having a conversation with them about being for life? Or what if they start asking questions before we’ve even prepared?
The accessibility of information and the speed of its dispersion on websites and social media exposes children to far more issues and opinions than at any other time in history. Although we must diligently monitor what our kids see while online and help them learn to discern what is true and reliable and what is not, we must also be proactive to help them think through challenging topics and arrive at biblically informed conclusions. When you are firm in your understanding of the biblical foundations and scientific support for the sanctity of human life, you can lead your child to consider questions like the following:
- When do you think life begins?
- Why is it essential for us to protect the unborn?
- Why do you think some people choose abortion?
- How can we show love and support for women who are considering abortion?
- How should we respond to someone who disagrees with our pro-life position?
- What can we do to support life at all stages?
We’ve created a practical pro-life guide specifically for parents: Raising Pro-Life Kids: A Practical Guide For Parents (PDF). We want you to engage with your children and students in a winsome, compelling, and relational way.
Despite recent political victories, the number of abortions continues to rise, reminding us that the battle for the sanctity of human life was never simply a political one. To win a war of ideologies, we must help the next generation develop a worldview that incorporates God’s value for human life because we have all been fearfully and wonderfully made.
