Introduction: Politics For The Reluctant
When thinking about politics—who to vote for, what causes to support—do you ever feel stuck between a rock and a hard place? We know the feeling. Dr. Jeff helps Christians think through why politics are important and invites you to see what the Bible says about engaging with our political leaders and our neighbors.
Myth #1: God Doesn’t Care About Politics
Jesus placed his primary loyalties with God, but that doesn’t mean that he ignored politics or that God doesn’t care about them. It also doesn’t mean that Jesus told us exactly how to vote in the Bible. So what does it mean that God cares about politics?
Myth #2: It’s Not My Problem
Politics are messy. I think everyone is tempted to act like it isn’t their problem. Dr. Jeff explains why politics might have more to do with you than you might think. Christians especially have a responsibility to engage in God’s work of redemption in the world, including his work to redeem nations and governments.
Myth #3: Choosing between the lesser of two evils is itself evil.
We know that sometimes voting feels impossible, especially when the candidates we are presented with seem evil. As Christians, our job is to lessen evil. Learn how to develop a set of principles that will help guide voting and political engagement.
Myth #4: Politics Doesn’t Matter to What is Really Important
Certainly, political engagement isn’t our ultimate goal in life; unity with God is. Dr. Jeff argues in this session that if politics is balanced alongside the family and church, then it can lead to a flourishing society. As Christians, we should be concerned with redeeming what is evil in our times.
